Is This the Best Compact EDC Sling? Greenroom136 SlingShifter Review

The Greenroom136 SlingShifter is a compact everyday-carry sling from a Malaysian brand led by designer Patrick. It looks small on paper, but after using it on a cross-country trip from Virginia to California, it turned out to hold far more than its listed capacity suggests.

Build and Materials

The SlingShifter is made from 1000D Cordura nylon with a PU coating on the inner shell. The internal lining is a ripstop nylon in a gold color that stands out against the exterior.

The version reviewed here is the Wolf Gray colorway, customized with aftermarket burnt orange and black zipper pulls sourced from Etsy. A teal zipper pull with black and yellow accents was added to one of the interior pockets as well.

Organization

The SlingShifter is broken into three main areas: a front pocket, a main compartment, and a back pocket.

Front Pocket

The front pocket is roomy enough to fit a hand inside, with two fabric dump pockets. During the trip it held an eye mask, multiple charging cables (including a three-in-one and a longer one-meter cable), wipes, hand sanitizer, a nose inhaler, and an iPhone with an expandable MagSafe accessory. The top of the pocket gives extra leverage for taller items.

On the exterior front there is a velcro panel with a couple of webbing loops for external carry, plus a spot for a morale patch. The reviewer found the webbing handy for hanging earbuds and similar items while traveling.

Main Compartment

The main compartment opens wide for easy access. In it, the reviewer carried an eye mask, a Matador inflatable pillow, a Nightcore power bank, a Soundcore foldable headset, and various charging accessories including an Anker travel charger, a power bank cable, and an AirFly Bluetooth transmitter.

There is an internal pocket suited for credit cards and small items. One design element drew criticism: a flat pocket on one side that the reviewer felt was less useful than a zippered or mesh pocket would have been, depending on how you pack.

Back Pocket

The back pocket works well for a passport and slim items. The reviewer stored an X-Pac accessory pouch from Westin containing extensions, legacy adapters, and a Swiss Gear multi-tool (knife removed for TSA, which he passed without issue).

The back pocket can also fit a phone or a Kindle, though the Kindle does not sit fully snug in the open-ended pocket. An iPad Mini did not fit, especially with a cover attached.

Strap and Carry

The strap system uses YKK hardware and is roughly two inches wide. It fits the reviewer, who wears a 2XL, comfortably and has enough adjustment range to accommodate up to a 3XL or 4XL frame.

Two things to keep in mind:

• The strap has no padding.
• The strap is fixed to the pack and cannot be decoupled.

• The flat side pocket in the main compartment isn't especially functional

Who It's For

The SlingShifter suits EDC users and travelers who want a compact sling that punches above its stated capacity. It carried a full travel kit of chargers, cables, and accessories with room to spare, making it a strong option for someone who packs cables, small electronics, and travel essentials.

It's less ideal if you need to carry a tablet, since the iPad Mini would not fit, or if you want a padded strap and a top grab handle. For phones, a Kindle, chargers, and everyday small gear, it proved to be a convenient and capable travel companion.
