A Small Pouch That Took Some Getting Used To

The Evergoods CAP 0.5L is a compact pencil-case-style pouch that sits somewhere between a mini tech organizer and a hobby kit. Up front, I'll be honest: I was a little disappointed early on, mostly because figuring out how to use it took some trial and error. After living with both versions for a while, though, it earned a regular spot in my rotation. Here's what you need to know.

Two Versions, One Design

I've been using both editions of this pouch side by side:

• X-Pac X42 edition – my go-to tech pouch
• Standard black-dyed fabric edition – my paracording hobby kit

Both share the same core construction and are padded at 360 degrees. That padding shapes how you use them, which I'll come back to.

Build and Materials

Evergoods clearly puts thought into material selection, and it shows across both pouches.

Exterior

• The X-Pac edition uses X-Pac X42 fabric, a sailcloth-style material that's water resistant and can absorb and dry out water.
• Zippers are YKK #8 RC with a quad-guard construction, and the zipper tape is DWR coated (durable water repellent).
• The standard edition uses a PU-coated exterior fabric rather than X-Pac, since it doesn't have X-Pac's built-in water resistance.

A note on coatings: DWR treatment longevity can range widely depending on use, while PU coating generally offers better longevity. As with any coating, expect a finite lifespan over years of use.

Interior

• The lining is PU coated with a silicone finish, giving it water resistance on the inside as well.
• Inside you get a mesh pocket on one panel and an opaque pocket on the other, sized for pens, pencils, a marker, a Sharpie, or a multi-tool.
• The interior is a coyote brown in two shades, which I like for visibility. Finding items against a lighter interior is easier than with a black-lined pouch.

Exterior Loop

There's a subtle one-inch webbing loop on the front. Evergoods uses it to work their logo into the design, and while you could clip external accessories to it, I wouldn't put too much weight on it since it reads more as a branding element.

Organization and Pack-Out

This is where the pouch demands a strategy. The 360-degree padding limits internal volume, so how you load it matters.

My recommendation is to use the flat interior surfaces for larger, flatter items and reserve the mid-panel pockets for smaller gear. Here's how I packed the X-Pac version as a mini tech pouch:

• A charger laid flat against one panel
• A Peak Design magnetic mobile tripod on the opposite side
• A 5000 mAh external power bank (enough for roughly one full charge on an iPhone 16 Pro Max)
• A 100W retractable cable
• A multi-charger tucked into a side pocket
• A 100W wall cable

I also added aftermarket coyote brown zipper pulls (from a third party) for a stronger, more comfortable grip. If you're not satisfied with the stock pulls, these are an easy upgrade.

Fully loaded, closing the pouch is a tight fit. It works, but you'll be managing space carefully.

The standard edition works nicely as a hobby kit. My paracording setup includes:

• Various tools in the mesh pocket
• Threads, a fabric cutter, and a lighter for finishing paracord ends
• A multi-tool

A Note on the "Desk Carry" Claim

Evergoods advertises that the pouch can lay flat as a desk carry. In practice, I've never seen mine actually lie flat. Because of the 360-degree padding, it holds its shape and sits more upright. These are newer to me, so it's possible they'll relax over time, but I wouldn't count on the flat-open desk layout as a primary use case.

Who It's For

The padding is the defining trait here. It's genuinely useful if you're carrying something fragile:

• Sunglasses or glasses
• A medical or medication kit that needs protection

For a standard tech pouch, the padding can feel like overkill, and it eats into capacity you might otherwise use for more gear.

Consider this pouch if you want:

• A premium, well-built pouch with strong longevity
• A protective home for breakables or a medical kit
• A compact carry for a few flat items, pens, Sharpies, or a multi-tool
• A tidy hobby kit organizer

Trade-Offs to Keep in Mind

• Price – Both are on the higher side, and the X-Pac edition costs more than the standard version. If you don't need X-Pac, the standard edition saves money.
• Capacity – Even at a stated 0.5L, the padding and structure mean you can fit less than some other 0.5L pencil cases I own.
• Shape – The rigid, padded form factor suits flat items and doesn't lie open flat as advertised.

Both editions are beautifully made and reflect Evergoods' attention to materials. The standard version is readily available, while the X-Pac edition is a special edition at a premium. Either way, if you want a durable, protective pouch for miscellaneous flat items and writing tools, this one delivers, as long as you go in understanding its limits on space.
